The internet is often imagined as a cloud. As moving through the air. Immaterial, ephemeral. Yet, 99% of internet traffic moves through submarine cables that have landing stations predominantly above the equator. The world wide wet consists of cables more than anything else. Acknowledging the material conditions of internet infrastructures makes it possible to ask: Who owns internet infrastructures – and whose internet(s) are we talking about? Who has access and who does not? Which landscapes is the internet in touch with? Could any of this be different?
